Should've Known Better

"Should've Known Better" was written by Richard Marx and is the opening track of of his eponymous debut album...Richard Marx...released in June of 1987. Marx became the first male solo artist in recording history to reach the top three of the Billboard 100 with four singles from a debut album. Those songs being "Should've Known Better","Don't Mean Nothing","Endless Summer Nights" and "Hold On to the Nights". The LP would go on to Triple Platinum status peaking at No. 8 while spending 86 weeks on the charts.

The inspiration for "Should've Known Better" came to Marx when he was 20 while dating some sort of (and unnamed) fatal-attraction type of head-job girl. Richard Marx married the actress Cynthia Rhodes in 1989 (they split in 2014), but he went through enough relationship drama before meeting her to trigger plenty of songs...and this song apparently was indicative of that. In 2012, Marx spoke about the girl who sparked "Should've Known Better". He was quoted as saying "We were both young, and she pitted me and another guy against each other without either of us knowing. It was all about her. She handled that whole situation wrong and people got hurt out of it, and I got a song out of it. But yeah, it was very, very specifically about a particular girl". Dumping a hot mess for a hit song...not a bad exchange. To me, it's more of a cautionary song about entering into a relationship with someone that doesn't feel the same way. The walls of reason, that love and/or an attraction, can cause one to run right through...persuing something that eventually will crash and burn...all the while in complete sight of the picture that logic had presented to you.You really should know better.
