Time

"Time" was written by Pink Floyd members...Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason. It is the fourth track off of Floyd's 1973 masterpiece...The Dark Side of the Moon. It is the only song on the album credited to all four members of the band, though the lyrics were written by Waters. The Dark Side of the Moon topped the charts in the US and Canada and remained on the charts for an unheard of 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988. With an estimated 50 million copies sold, it is Pink Floyd's most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, it is one of the greatest albums of all time.

Simply put, "Time" is a song about how life can slip by with many people not realizing it until it is too late. That notion of wasting time is offered right from the song's opening..."Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day,You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way,Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town,Waiting for someone or something to show you the way". Waters got the idea for "Time" when he realized he was no longer preparing for anything in life, but was right in the middle of it. He has described this realization taking place at ages 28 and 29 in various interviews. "Time" is noted for its long introductory passage of clocks chiming and alarms ringing which was recorded as a quadrophonic test by Alan Parsons but not specifically for the album. Each clock was recorded separately in an antiques store. The drums used on the track are roto-toms which have no shell and are tuned by rotating. The promotion of the song ends with Water's realization that life was not about preparing yourself for what happens next but rather about grabbing control of your own destiny..."Every year is getting shorter,Never seem to find the time,Plans that either come to naught,Or half a page of scribbled lines,Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way". Hmmm...lot of that going around. The album art for The Dark Side of the Moon was developed by the English art design group Hipgnosis. The light band emanating from the prism on the album cover has six colors. It is missing indigo compared to the traditional division of the light spectrum into red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The team purposefully omitted the hue because they believed it wouldn't read properly. As of 2014, The Dark Side of the Moon remains the second best selling album of all time just behind Michael Jackson's Thriller and just ahead of The Eagles Greatest Hits (1971-1975). In September of 2008, Richard Wright died from an undisclosed form of cancer. He was 65 years old.
