What Is Life

"What Is Life" was written by George Harrison and is the fifth track of of his 1970 release...All Things Must Pass. The LP is a triple album and was Harrison's first solo work since the break-up of the Beatles in April that year. The album reflects the influence of Harrison's musical activities with artists such as Bob Dylan, the Band, and Billy Preston during 1968-70, and his growth as an artist beyond his supporting role to former bandmates John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The album cover, showing Harrison surrounded by four garden gnomes, can be understood as a statement on his independence from the Beatles.

"What Is Life" is one of several Harrison love songs that appear to be directed at both a woman and a deity. These lyrics have caused some debate as to whether "What Is Life" should be viewed as a straightforward love song (perhaps to Harrison's wife Pattie)... or a devotional song like many of Harrison's compositions. The song's second verse offers a somewhat confusing promise from Harrison should his love be rejected..."What I know, I can do, If I give my love now to everyone like you, But if it's not love that you need, Then I'll try my best to make everything succeed". Knowing that Harrison was a very spiritual man and quite down to Earth, "What is Life" (to me) will always be about Jesus Christ. I know this song means many things to many people. For many, it is for his wife Pattie Boyd who was having an affair with Eric Clapton who consequently played guitar on the song. Either way, "What Is Life" was written to intentionally have a dual meaning ...love of Christ and/or love of another person. It works on both levels, although George probably approached it from the religious side. This is Harrison's best.
