Real Men

"Real Men" was written by Joe Jackson and can be found on his 1982 release Night and Day. The track is about the 80's gay culture and Jackson's own blatant homosexuality. While the song is one of his many compositions that define his sexual identity, at the same time it is a reflection upon the confusion that modern society has about what actually constitutes being a man. It's basically questioning who has the right to decide who is a man and who is not.

"Real Men" is littered with powerful lyrics that support the main structure of the song and a constant reminder of Jackson's sexual preference. "See the nice boys, dancing in pairs...Golden earring, golden tan...Blow-wave in their hair"..."Sure they're all straight, straight as a line...All the gays are macho can't you see their leather shine" are lines where Jackson references the masculine side of homosexuals. "You don't want to sound dumb, don't want to offend...So don't call me a fagot not unless you are a friend"..."Then if you're tall and handsome and strong...You can wear the uniform and I could play along" is aimed at the role playing that is popular in homosexual relationships. "Time to get scared, time to change plan...Don't know how to treat a lady...Don't know how to be a man"..."Time to admit, what you call defeat...Cause there's women running past you now while you just drag your feet" is an obvious indication of the confusion, whether past or present, that can haunt a man (or boy coming of age) confronting the demands that his own sexuality may not be that of the majority of the male population. This live track can be found on Jackson's double live LP...Joe Jackson Live 1980/86. Jackson dedicates the song to the Australian Rugby team...a sport decisively made up of...real men.Hmmm.
