All I Want

"All I Want" was written by the group Toad the Wet Sprocket and is off of their 1992 release...Fear.Coming out of California,Toad the Wet Sprocket formed in 1986.But it wasn't until the release of "All I Want" that gave the group national recognition.The song peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 of 1992 and became one of their most well known songs.

"All I Want" is a song about a relationship between two people that is based upon lies.The opening lines support that notion..."Nothing's so loud,As hearing when we lie".Following this we learn that the truth is not accepted too easily (perhaps leading to the lies) and what the woman thinks of the man when he states the truth..."The truth is not kind,And you've said neither am I".The song shows us some promise in this deceptive relationship when we hear..."But the air outside so soft is saying everything" which leads into the main chorus that shows us what the man really wants...and it's not the lying..."All I want is to feel this way,To be this close,To feel the same".Apparently that is all he ever wanted.But the relationship heads even further South when we learn... "Nothing's so cold,As closing the heart when all we need is to free the soul".Following this the doubt the two have becomes a reality as the response to the last line is..."But we wouldn't be that brave I know".All hope for salvation is lost with the song's middle chorus telling us..."And it won't matter now,Whatever happens will be"..."Though the air speaks of all we'll never be,It won't trouble me".In other words the promise the air brought them earlier is all but gone.And the writer will not be haunted by this.One would assume the relationship will ultimately dissolve.The two will only become a memory of something that never could happen.There are many reasons relationships will inevitably experience deception.Extramarital affairs,spending,separate bank accounts and substance abuse are just to mention a few of the things one will elect to keep private from their significant other.It is estimated that over 80% of men and women have lied during a relationship or marriage.That number is probably more likely closer to 90%.Estimates for infidelity,when you combine those who are married with those who are not married yet,are over 60%.Thailand ranks among the world's most adulterous countries according to a 2012 survey.
