Hannah Jane

"Hannah Jane" was written by Hootie & the Blowfish members Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, Darius Rucker and Jim Sonefeld. It is the opening track off of the band's 1994 debut LP...Cracked Rear View. Cracked Rear View hit the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts in 1995 selling over 10.5 million copies in that year alone. It is easily the band's most successful release.

"Hannah Jane" most likely draws its name from a local pub in the Columbia, South Carolina area where the band is from. In the song's perspective, the name is most likely the name of the woman our writer is talking to.Told in partial reflection, the ballad tells the story of a man revisiting a past relationship and contemplating just where that stands in the current setting of both participants. The woman apparently has two children of her own now..."You got your big girl ,Now you've got your young one too". The next line is the authors way of asking her if she would like to be with him again (assuming she is a single parent)..."Wondering if some day I could have them the way I once had you". There are two areas of concern we learn to hear, the first of which from our author wanting to know where he stands with her..."So what are you gonna do about me?,I'll be there when you have no one else". The second comes in the songs chorus when the author is seemingly talking to himself..."You don't wanna be alone,You don't want to see the sun go down,You don't wanna open the door,And see her go,One step and tomorrow comes,Two steps and she's off with someone,Three steps and it's all you know,You'll be gone, she'll be gone". Funny how one of the lines in the song is "So don't you want to reach out and take my hand" which can be a hidden run into the LP's second track "Hold My Hand". We never do learn the fate of the writers offering but we can assume it is not met as the ballad's last lines are "You'll be gone, she'll be gone". Simply put, "Hannah Jane" is a song about a love slipping away. A song of a pending loss clutching to the straws of a hopeful love.
