I Don't Like Mondays

"I Don't Like Mondays" was written by Bob Geldof and performed by his band The Boomtown Rats in 1979. Geldof wrote the song after reading about the shooting spree of 16-year old Brenda Ann Spencer, who opened fired on children in a school playground at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California on the 29th of January in 1979. Spencer killed two adults and injured eight children and one police officer.

Brenda Ann Spencer's home was just across the street from the school. After firing thirty rounds, Spencer barricaded herself inside her home for almost seven hours.Ultimately, she surrendered to police.Spencer showed no remorse for her crime and when asked why she committed the attack her full explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays...this livens up the day". She was sentenced to 25 years to life and was denied parole for the fourth time in April 2009. Brenda Ann Spencer is 50 years old today and currently is incarcerated at the California Institution for Women in Chino, California. She will not be eligible for parole again until 2019 when she will be 57.
