When You Love a Woman

"When You Love a Woman" was written by Steve Perry, Neal Schon, and Jonathan Cain in 1996 and is the third track off of Journey's tenth studio release...Trial by Fire. The LP marked the reunion of the classic Journey lineup, which had not recorded together since 1983's Frontiers album. "When You Love a Woman", which reached No. 12 and No. 1 on the Billboard 100 and Adult Contemporary charts respectively. Trial by Fire peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified Platinum in the United States by the RIAA. The band did not receive another Platinum award until Revelation in 2008.

The "there's a band of gold that shines" line is most likely a reference to an eternal love indicating marriage, commitment, or simply living a life together forever. As the song progresses, the reflection transcends into that of hope..."I hope and pray tonight, Somewhere you're thinking of me girl". "When You Love a Woman" is a very subdued song lyrically, but the music that accompanies the vocals make the lyrics have a weight that is carried throughout the ballad. The tonality of Perry's voice is so accurate. Simply put, it is a song about the strength, power and influential importance of a woman's love. To know she is standing by your side...offering a joy that lasts forever. And to those certain men who never thought they could ever experience something like that, it very well could be enough to make them cry.
