Silver Springs

"Silver Springs" was written by Stevie Nicks for Fleetwood Mac in 1976.The song was scheduled to be on the band's 1977 LP...Rumours...but it never got there. The exclusion of this song from Rumours only led to more tension within Fleetwood Mac as eventually both Lindsey Buckingham (1987) and Nicks (1981) left the band until their reunion in 1997.The song is simply about the ending of the romantic relationship between Nicks and Buckingham. The inspiration for the song's title came when Nicks saw a sign for Silver Spring, Maryland while driving with Buckingham. The name was,to her,so beautiful that she wrote it into the song.

"Silver Springs" is a sad song.Nicks wrote the ballad after her breakup with Lindsey Buckingham...Fleetwood Mac's guitarist and her long time boyfriend. She wanted to make sure he would never forget about her...and the composition is loaded with such a reflection. The odd thing about her reason for writing the song is that she broke up with him...but you know how women can be.The lyrics are focused on the pain of love."You could be my Silver Springs,Blue green colors flashing,I would be your only dream" are the opening lines setting up what Nicks hoped this relationship would be.Blue and green are festive colors...colors of celebration.I would be your only dream is self explanatory. But the relationship went South as he hear..."I'll begin not to love you,Turn around, see me running" as well as "I'll say I loved you years ago,Tell myself you never loved me".Knowing the relationship is all but done,Nicks focuses on the haunting of Buckingham and the assignment of blame as to why it failed..."Time casts a spell on you, but you won't forget me,I know I could have loved you but you would not let me".Hmmm...it's always the man's fault. We almost feel the anger in her as she tells us..."I'll follow you down til' the sound of my voice will haunt you".This reminder that Nicks employs is intended to be a lifetime one..."You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you".A last parting shot at Buckingham is her oversing in the song as you can hear..."Was I just a fool".A repeating chorus in the song is almost like Nicks wants us to know that she was taken for granted at times as you hear throughout the song the questions..."And did you say she was pretty,And did you say that she loves you".But she gives us a reply to those inquiries by following it immediately up with the thankless words of..."Baby, I don't wanna know".After writing so much remorse,I think she decides to end the song on a positive note by getting us right back where we started by refraining the song's opening lines...lines that gave us promise..."You could be my Silver Springs,Blue green colors flashing"."Silver Springs" has been referred by many as the best song that never made it to an album...it was replaced by another song Nicks wrote called "I Don't Want To Know".Twenty years after its initial intention of making to the track list of Rumours,"Silver Springs" was included on the 1997 live LP...The Dance. It was also released as a single the very same year.Nicks finally got her wish as "Silver Springs" was included (in it's rightful place) on the Rumours re-issue...released in 2004.
