Duster - Stratosphere (1998) ALBUM REVIEW

Duster was formed after the dissolution of the bands Calm and Mohinder, as the like-minded musicians Canaan Dove Amber and Clay Parton began making lo-fi tapes of noise-laden jams, lethargic and psychedelic soundscapes slowed to a halt, and their own musical experiments. These recordings, released in limited quantities under the names Duster and Valium Aggelein, laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most enduring and emotional statements in slowcore and indie. February 24th, 1998 saw the release of Stratosphere, Duster's first studio album. Originally a forgotten gem of lo-fi slow indie bliss, long out of print, internet music communities such as /mu/ and RateYourMusic, in tandem with a lush reissue by the Numero Group label, have brought Duster and their legacy back to life, led by the brilliance on display for Stratosphere's entire 54 minute runtime. Today, we're going to take a look at it.
