Elliott Smith - Either/Or (1997) ALBUM REVIEW
Following the lowkey releases of his first 2 studio albums, defined by hushed, lo-fi acoustic folk songs, Elliott Smith found himself reaching gradual success. Quickly prioritizing his solo work over his time in the Portland rock band Heatmiser, which he'd been a member of since 1991, tensions quickly rose and the band split in 1996, releasing their last album Mic City Sons that same year. Upon signing with revered label Kill Rock Stars in 1995 for the release of his self-titled second album, Elliott was quick to get back to recording solo material. Compiled from material recorded across 1996, recorded at numerous locations with a handful of personnel, Either/Or has since become the defining document of Elliott Smith's entire career, remaining his most successful and acclaimed record 24 years after its initial release. Today, we're going to take a look at it.
