A common question from noobs in the gym has to do with the amount of time they should rest in between sets. Unfortunately, the true, yet unsatisfying answer to this query is and will always be: it depends. Rest periods should be understood within the context of training. And here I’m going to define training as an organized plan made up of different physical activities that aim to achieve specific goals. If there are no goals in your training routine, it’s simply impossible to determine how long you should rest in between sets. This video offers some sound general guidelines for optimal rest periods depending on 4 different goals:
- rest periods for max strength
- rest periods for muscle growth
- rest periods for muscle endurance
- rest periods for metabolic conditioning
