African Scops Owl Call & Sounds

One of the most common owl sounds of the African bush at night - the soft purring 'prrrup' calls of the African Scops Owl (Otus senegalensis). Each note of this call is actually a very short oscillating trill, giving it the purring quality. These sounds are repated are regular short intervals and can go on for many minutes.

Although the call of the African Scops Owl is very monotonous, I find it a calm night rhythm to hear when sleeping out in the bush! When there are several birds calling at a distance in slightly different pitches it creates a pleasant chorus to drift off to.

The African Scops Owl calls in this video were recorded in Kafue National Park, Zambia. More examples of wildlife sounds and bird calls can be found on my website https://wildambience.com/wildlife-sounds/
