Siamang Sounds & Calls

The calls & sounds of two groups of wild Siamangs singing in Malaysia's rainforest. The loud, booming calls of the Siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus) are one of the loudest natural sounds in the rainforests of Malaysia and Sumatra and can carry for three or more kilometres.

Siamangs have a large throat sac which is inflated to amplify the deep booming calls. Duetting pairs combine these deeper sounds with high-pitched barking notes and screams. Family groups declare their territories by singing each morning.

Siamangs are the largest of the gibbon species and are classified as endangered by the IUCN.
