When zoomed in on a document within InDesign, the scroll bars allow for the panning around of that document. However, it is often very time consuming to pan in this manner.

The Hand Tool (keyboard shortcut: H) allows the user to easily pan around a document. The way to temporarily invoke the Hand Tool is to hold down the Spacebar. Releasing the Spacebar returns function to the tool that was just in use.

The major problem with using the Spacebar shortcut is when editing text. With an active cursor inside a text frame, pressing the Spacebar will just insert a space(s).
