Selecting an anchor point within a vector path using the Direct Selection Tool will highlight both the anchor point and the handles used to shape the path around that anchor. The visual size of these attributes can be controlled via the Size option within the "Selection & Anchor Display" tab of the Preferences. Preferences can be found within the Illustrator menu on a Mac and the Edit menu on a Windows machine.

The visual appearance of the handles can have one of two styles. These style choices operate as buttons within the "Handle Style" section of the "Selection & Anchor Display" tab of the Preferences.

By default, Illustrator will not show handles when multiple anchors are selected. To change this, activate the "Show handles when multiple anchors are selected" option within the "Selection & Anchor Display" tab of the Preferences.
