Bulking and Cutting VS Maingaining - what's BEST for Body Recomposition and Lean Muscle Gains?
Bulking and Cutting has been used for years as the bodybuilding method for gaining lean muscle. But is this the best approach for YOU?
I've personally went through multiple "Bulking Diets" and "Cutting Diets" in my years as a competitive bodybuilder. From the time I started competing as a junior bodybuilder in 1995 right up until 2011 - I was bulking and cutting every single year with the hopes of getting bigger and more ripped for my next bodybuilding competition.
Now it certainly did work - especially as a teenager and in my early 20's. But as I got older it became harder to make gains and stay lean.
But after a few bulking and cutting cycles what I found was when I'd bulk up - I'd gain weight alright, but the majority of that weight was excess bodyfat.
Then when I'd switch gears to focus on cutting - I'd end up losing a lot of the lean mass I ended up gaining while bulking.
It was like a catch 22 where I was just spinning my wheels. My body weight would go up and down by as much as 40 to 50 pounds from my "Off Season" to "Pre-Contest" and the end result was I'd always end up at the same contest weight each time - not really gaining any more muscle mass on my frame.
That's where the idea of "Main Gaining" comes in... Instead of purposing eating a calorie surplus to try and force the body to grow, with maingaining you simply eat enough to fuel your workouts, meet your energy demands, and let your body grow.
It's a totally different approach, but one that I feel it a better option for most guys who are looking to build a lean athletic muscular physique - while feeling good in the process.
In this video myself and Jeff Samataro (one of my top Muscle After 40 coaching students) discuss the topic of Bulking and Cutting VS Maingaining and what approach has ultimately worked the best for us.
