Symbolism was born in France, around 1885, as a try to mix elements of sensitive perception and spiritual elements. It was a reaction against realism and impressionism, and it is more linked to romanticism. Symbolists try to capture absolute truths by expressing them indirectly or with symbols.

Painting: the themes are taken from mythology, mysticism, occultism and sometimes religion, and also feelings, passions and death. It is marked by the decadentism. One of the most recurrent theme is the femme fatale, that is, sensual but evil woman.

Gustave Moreau: his main source is mythology. Oedipus and the sphinx, Venus emerging from the sea, Hercules and the hydra, Hesiod and the muse, Jason and Medea, Prometheus, Orpheus, Jupiter and Semele (influence of Indian culture), Song of Songs, Chimera, Saint George and the dragon, Aparition
Odilon Redon: he represents the magic, visionary and fabulous. Heart has its reasons, Eye, Spirit waters, Coquille, Muse in Pegasus, Cyclops, Silence, Figure 1876
Gustav Klimt: he can be named as symbolist but also modernist. I will talk more about him in modernism, but about symbolism I must say that his paintings are charged with a lyric-decorative meaning, depicting usually the femme fatale. Kiss, Frieze of Beethoven, Three ages of woman
Pierre de Chavannes: Death of the young girls, Hope, Dream, Poor fisherman, Spring
Carlos Schwabe: the paintings of this man are totally scary! Death of the gravedigger, Spleen, Marriage of the poet and the muse, Evening bells, La douleur, Study of la Vague (2 paintings)
Leon Spilliaert: Passage
Edward Robert Hughes: influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, his paintings are very fantastic. The Valkyrie’s vigil, Night, Night with her train of stars, Heart of snow, Midsummer eve, Bertuccio’s bride, Summer fantasy
Herbert James Draper: Lament of Icarus, Acuatic Nymph, Tristan and Isolde
Franz von Stuck: this is the painter who most clearly represent the topic of the femme fatale, as is seen in the painting The Sin. Dancers, Struggle for woman, Salome, Inferno, Meduse, Sisyphus, Wounded amazon
Eugène Carrière: his paintings are like spirits! Femme accoudée à la table, Maternity, Head of woman, Child with a tureen
Jean Delville: very mysterious paintings, occultism. Madame Stuart Merril, Treasures of Satan, The Age of Splendor, Terra de Somnis II, Meduse, Orpheus, School of Plato
Félicien Rops: Satan sowing, Pornocrates, Tentations of Saint Anthony
Fernand Khnopff: Head of woman (2 artworks), Silence, Incense, Portrait of Marguerite Khnopff, The Caress, I lock my door upon myself
Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre: Tarde, Capas de la reina

Music: Arabesque N. 1 and N. 2 by Debussy
