In India, civilization began in the middle of the third millennium BCE, in the area of the Indus basin, where perhaps Sumerian influences existed. From the 1500 BCE there was the invasion of the indi, peoples of the aryan race and the indo-european language, from whose fusion with the pre-existing population the Hindu civilization was born. Art in India is a reflection of the society and has a religious character, integrated with nature and the universal order.

In this chapter I’m going to talk about three different countries outside India that have indian constructions.

Sri Lanka: known before as Ceylon, it begans with buddhism theravada, that is, without representation of Buddha. When they get the mahayana representation, the Buddha adquires its own identity.
Sigiriya: the caves of this place has paintings similar to the Ajanta paintings, this time about the Apsaras, celestial dancers. From the end of V century. Different faces, very well done
Temple of Nallur Kandaswamy of Jaffna
Stūpa of Jetavanaramaya
Stūpa Dagoba Ruvanvelisaya, Anuradhapura

Indonesia: here there is the Saliendra culture.
Stūpa of Borobudur: the biggest buddhist monument of the world, connected with the Gupta culture. It unifies the stūpa as funerary monument and also a plant simulating the mandala. The complex is like a representation of the universe, and also the Mount Meru

Cambodia: here there is the Khmer culture. The mix buddhism and hinduism in the form of Harihara, a fussion between Vishnu and Shiva.
Angkor Wat: it is the biggest hinduist temple. Dedicated to Vishnu, it combines the typology of temple-mount (reference to Mount Meru) with the typology of galleries. It is like a residence for gods. It has a prasat, a pyramidal temple surrounded by various courtyards. Surrounded by a pit with water, in the interior there are gardens and pools. The towers remind to the hinduist sikharas. There are reliefs as decoration
Bayon Temple: located in Angkor Thom, it represents also the Mount Meru. The most interesting of this place are the great amount of towers with many smiling faces, called as the Khmer Smile. It is thought that they are bodhisattvas. There are also reliefs of narrative and genre scenes

Music: Taj Mahal, Traditional Music from Ancient India
