Gothic flourishes in the second half of the XII century and comes till the Renaissance (in Italy until the XV century). It was born in northern France, and little by little was spreading and imposing itself on Romanesque. It is called so by the Goths, as a derogatory term.

The Renaissance people named them with the term of Goth due that they wanted to come back to the roman classicism. Gothic is consecuence of the new society with economic prosperity and the bourgeoisie. In XIII century, Francisco of Asis establishes the franciscans and Saint Domingo establishes the dominics. They are two mendicant orders, who lived in poverty. The monastic orders were lost in nature, in monasteries. There were epidemics of plague, famines, wars...

Ducento – XIII Century.
Use of frescoes and painting in wood.
Pietro Cavallini: roman school, he did the mosaic in the apse of Santa-Maria-in-Trastévere and the Final Judgement, and also the fresco in Santa-Cecilia-in-Trastévere. His Annunciation is also known. Byzantine influence.
Cimabue: from Florence. Byzantine influence more marked. Two Virgins (Trinity and Maestà), with long tunics and angels. The crucifix is in Santa Croce. Next two images are the Virgin and Saint John. As you can see, similar to byzantine representations. The Crucifixion is in San Francesco of Assisi.
Duccio di Boninsegna: sienese school. His masterpiece is the Maestà of the cathedral of Siena. Byzantine influence as the others. Other artworks are Resurrection of Lazarus, Madonna with Child, and Madonna and Child with angels, with nice yellow color, similar to gold.

Trecento – XIV Century.
Simone Martini: he continues the legacy of Duccio in Siena. He did the Virgen in the Comunale Palace of Siena. Also worked in the chapel of Saint Martin in Assasi. Masterpieces are the altarpiece of Annunciation and the diptych of Annunciation. It is interesting the Alegory of Virgil.
Giotto di Bondone: he began the Renaissance painting. He studied with Cimabue and then in Rome. His artwork, except some times, are frescoes in Assisi, Padua and Florence. The chapel of Scrovegni has scenes of the life of Jesus. In the chapel of the Palace del Podestá of Florence there is a portrait of Dante Alighieri. In his adoration of the kings you can see the Haley comet. In San Francesco of Assisi the frescoes talk about the life of the saint (last three images).
