Elvis Presley - My Baby Left Me - The Live Comparison Series - Volume Sixty Eight

The similarities between “That’s All Right, Mama” and “My Baby Left Me” are many, from the melody being virtually identical to both having been written by Arthur Crudup. However, the differences are also considerable, for example, “That’s All Right” was a classic Sun recording but “My Baby Left Me” was recorded around nineteen months later after Elvis had joined RCA and the former is without doubt the far better known.
Chronologically, “My Baby Left Me” was the seventh song recorded by Elvis for RCA and this was achieved on 30 January 1956 at RCA’s studio one in New York. Although released as a ‘b’ side to “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” in May 1956, and on a couple of subsequent EP’s, it was not until January 1959 before it could be found on an album. This album was titled “For LP fans only” and ironically also featured “That’s All Right” and both of these Crudup compositions began either side of the album.
Whereas “That’s All Right” became a staple of Elvis’ live show, both in the fifties and at different times throughout the seventies, the same cannot be said for “My Baby Left Me”. There are only a couple of documented cases of the latter being performed in the fifties, on 25 May 1956 in Detroit and on 12 August 1956 in New Orleans although no audio is known to exist of these shows. As far as the seventies is concerned, Elvis only performed the song five times and all in 1974 with each of those renditions making up this compilation.
Version One – 28 January 1974, Dinner Show, Las Vegas – The First Rendition
Version Two - 28 January 1974, Midnight Show, Las Vegas
Version Three – 2 March 1974, Tulsa, Oklahoma
Version Four – 20 March 1974, Memphis – The RCA Live Master
Until October 2001, this version remained the only officially released live rendition having been part of the “As Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis” album in July 1974.
Version Five – 19 August 1974, Opening Show, Las Vegas – The Final Rendition

As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
