Elvis Presley - Way Down - From First Take to the Master

One of the finest songs to emerge from Elvis’ final recording sessions at Graceland was “Way Down” which was also a major highlight of his final studio album “Moody Blue”. It is essentially an up tempo fusion of country and rock and works superbly in conjunction with J.D. Sumner’s superb bass singing and the excellent work by Elvis’ own T.C.B. band.
It was released as a single in June 1977 with “Pledging My Love” on the flip side, but seemed destined to be only a minor hit peaking at #31 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, Elvis’ untimely death saw it’s decline reversed and became a major worldwide hit, peaking at #1 in many parts of the world.
Written by Layng Martine Jr., Elvis recorded the song at Graceland on 29 October 1976, the second last day of recordings. With only “Pledging My Love” following “Way Down” that day, and the vocal overdub to “He’ll Have To Go” recorded two days later, this became the third last song ever recorded by Elvis.
