Final Safari Drive for Tigers in Chitwan National Park
#chitwannationalpark #nepal #bengaltigers
A fast paced 3 day, 2 night trip to Chitwan Safari Park in Nepal ends with a 4 hour jeep safari.....the final chance to see a Bengal Tiger in the wild.
Spoiler alert: we didn't see any.
The grass was really high and it was relatively wet, so apparently the wildlife wasn't particularly active. Apparently that's one of the issues of visiting Chitwan in December.
Regardless, we did see a rhino having a great time in a lake just eating the vegetation off the bottom by himself. We also stopped of at a Gharial crocodile rehabilitation centre which was actually really good (I didn't expect it to be after the elephant 'training centre'). The gharial crocodile is particularly ugly and whilst we had seen quite a few in the river, I didn't realise just how big they could grow.
Apart from that it was a pretty uneventful game drive, though that's the risk you take when trying to find wild animals!
Overall, would I recommend visiting Chitwan? It's a hard one because it all depends on what you get to see. Sure, the safari tower wasn't anywhere near expectations and the elephant training centre was terrible. However, I really enjoyed the safari walk - though in retrospect it is necessarily risky and whilst I'm glad I did it, I don't think it's worth the risk.
If I'd seen a Bengal Tiger I'd be raving about Chitwan, especially considering the whole trip cost $150 USD all in.
But I didn't.
So I reserve the right to sit firmly on the fence with this one.
