Visiting Cape Town | Things to do, food, day trips, logistics and surprises!

Wrapping up 2-3 weeks in Cape Town, I wanted to share as much information as possible from things to do in Cape Town through logistics, costs, food, day trips and things that surprised me.

If you're thinking about whether it's worth visiting Cape Town.....it is. I'm going back as soon as I can.

I've included some further details and links below:

LOGISTICS

Getting around: We didn't use public transport, although Uber is cheap and widely available throughout Cape Town. We actually hired a car (from Thrifty) which was really affordable - £20 a day for a pick up truck (a.k.a Bakkie). It was really easy to collect it in the CBD and drop it off at the airport before flying.

Costs: The Rand is pretty weak, which isn't great for South Africans, but does mean that if your pounds, euros or dollars tend to go quite far in Cape Town! Compared to major cities in Europe or the U.S, Cape Town is really cheap...which means you can do more.

Internet: Not the fastest, not the slowest. The issue is that South Africa has load shedding where they cut off the electricity for portions of Cape Town for hours at a time. Whilst you can download an app called EskomSePush which tells you when this will happen - it's annoying that they do it during working hours.

Safety: South Africa in general is going to be a place where safety is a higher concern. We stayed in Camps Bay which is a fairly well-to-do area of Cape Town. As such, whilst there are armed security guards and electric fences, we didn't necessarily feel unsafe. Just take heightened precautions.
FOOD IN CAPE TOWN

The food is amazing, pretty much anywhere you go. If you order a seafood pasta, there's almost more seafood than pasta!

We ate a few times at Hussar Grill which for all intents and purposes is a steak house chain. Who knows, it might be looked down upon by South Africans but you can get a 500g T-bone steak with a side for 220 ZAR (about £11).

There are also more high end places like Pot Luck Club which is supposedly really good. Just rest assured that the food is some of the best I've ever had.
SURPRISES

Incredibly beaches - I knew the sea was going to be cold, but I didn't realise how clear it would be. Alongside that, the beaches have white sand. If you looked at pictures you would be forgiven for thinking it was Mexico or the Caribbean! Just go to Llandudno Bay and see for yourself.

Amazing drives - I didn't realise how mountainous the Western Cape was. It was hard to keep my eyes on the road at some points. One thing I would definitely recommend is to drive along Chapman's Peak drive, it's genuinely one of the most scenic roads I've ever seen.
THINGS TO DO

You can watch the individual videos on each thing, but there are loads of things to do and day trips from Cape Town:

Table Mountain: https://youtu.be/sfR5GZ0gFTk

Lion's Head: https://youtu.be/ZBcewLDji-Y

Cape Point and African penguins at Simon's Town: https://youtu.be/VLg7XwPvFjg

The Botanical gardens are a nice place to spend a morning or an afternoon. You can also go to concerts there which may be worth buying tickets for.

Bo Kaap is an area of Cape Town known for its colourful houses. You don't need a whole day there, just an hour, but it's also worth visiting.

You can do day trips to the wine regions like Stellenbosch and Franschooek, but I'd recommend going for a couple of days instead: https://youtu.be/MbdSBchDelw

Also, if you don't have the time to go to the national parks (especially if you haven't done safari) then I'd recommend driving for an overnight stay at Aquila Private Game Reserve: https://youtu.be/zUJlJkiCzDU
