Climbing to Lobuche & first sight of Kala Patthar | EBC Trek Day 9
#ebctrek #lobuche #kalapatthar
Day 8 of the Everest base camp trek and we're heading from Dughla at 4,600m to Lobuche at 4,900m elevation. It takes us up and into a completely new valley, with an almost straight shot to Everest base camp and our first view of Kala Patthar.
We couldn't resist another visit to Chola lake in the morning though. With the sun hitting the frozen lake and the wind picking up, the ice was cracking and groaning. Again, it is my favourite place on the EBC trek and one that I would highly recommend. Especially since the trek to Lobuche is relatively short so you definitely have the time for a morning visit to Chola lake.
There is a short but steep climb out of Dughla and into the next valley which whilst not terrible, seems to sap your energy within the first hour of the day's hiking. However, it's then relatively flat all the way to Lobuche.
You get some great views of Lobuche peak as well. We were lucky enough to see a team descending from the peak.
The valley that Lobuche, Gorakshep, EBC base camp and Kala Patthar sits in is completely different to the one that you spend most of your time trekking in. It's incredibly windy and substantially colder. My guide, Ganesh, said that it's always windy throughout the whole valley. So whilst it was sunny, it was still -11c with the wind chill making it 'feel' like -17c.
Either way, we made it to Lobuche in good time and after sorting out our rooms in the tea house we made our way up a short climb to see the dust and rock covered Khumbu glacier that carves its way down through the valley. It also offered up our first view of Kala Patthar which is only a few hours further up the valley.
24 hours to go and we would be at base camp and hopefully Kala Patthar for sunset.
