Change of plan: Namche Bazaar to Pengboche (EBC Trek Day 4)
#ebctrek #pengboche #himalayas
Day 4 of the Everest Base Camp Trek. We had initially planned to spend another day in Namche Bazaar to complete our acclimitisation but we had a change of plan.
Instead of spending 3 nights acclimatising in Namche Bazaar, we would sy goodbye to Namche after 2 nights. Instead, we would hike 5-7 hours up from 3,400m to 3,900 to a small town called Pengboche. We would then spend 2 nights acclimatising in Pengboche which would allow us to also visit Ama Dablam on our acclimatisation day on day 5.
It was a fairly easy start to the day as we climbed out of Namche Bazaar and across a relatively flat route on the side of the valley. We then headed down the valley to the river from Lawi Schyasi, cross the river and then climb up to Tengboche.
This was the first challenging part of the EBC trek. I was expecting an hour climb up to Tengboche (you can almost see it from the valley floor), but it ended up taking over 2 sweaty hours. It's fairly unrelenting with multiple cutbacks so be warned.
A lot of people decide to spend the night in Tengboche (where you can also visit the Tengboche monastery) though after a quick lunch we wanted to push on to Pengboche.
You descend again, this time on the other side of the ridge and out of the sunlight. Suddenly all of the pipes and rivers that we came across were completely frozen and as we climbed back up to Pengboche it became clear that we were now entering an altitude where the cold starts to bite. Another warning: at the top of the climb you go through a gate where you have the option to turn right to lower Pengboche or left to Upper Pengboche. We went to lower Pengboche because the climb to Upper Pengboche is deceptively long and somewhat unnecessary.
Next up, Ama Dablam base camp.
