Elvis Presley - Steamroller Blues - 18 March 1974 - The Richmond Coliseum

The very first live rendition of this song, on 4 August 1972, by Elvis is probably the finest due to it’s pure, raw, bluesy and stripped down nature. It would appear that the song would not be performed again until the Aloha shows in January 1973 after which it would be a regular on the set list.
However, some of the finest renditions out with that first rendition are to be found during Elvis’ first tour of 1974. This tour, one of his finest, is in stark contrast to his final tour of the year both of which contain renditions of this song.
This rendition from that March 1974 tour comes from a show in The Richmond Coliseum on 18 March, the twenty second of twenty four show on that particular tour. It is one of the finest in that March 1974 collection and it is clear throughout that Elvis is right in the zone throughout.
Listen to the unique intro, then Elvis singing “I’m a steamrollin’ snake!!”, some off mic “yeah’s” before scatting throughout the instrumental break and then practically growling into the final verse not to mention the delicious “whoo” at the finale!! Superb!!
