2022-12-11 Xiao Qi Ji ~ Momma & Me In Yard Three

#PandaStory: Today (Sunday) is the 4th day that our 27 1/2 month old Giant Panda cub Xiao Qi Ji and his mother Mei Xiang have spent most of their mornings in the big yard, yard 3 as well as the "cub's room", room 4. In the past this has indicated that the Zoo is preparing to begin the separation/weaning process. Here are some scenes from yesterday, the only day that a camera operator has been present during these times.

From what I've observed, Mei is ready for this transition as she has been particularly growly with Qi Ji during times that he wants to play as you see in the indoor scenes before they head outdoors. And for whatever reason, her behavior makes him more spunky, which makes momma bear more grumpy.

We'll see how this progresses, but for now they're still together and he's still nursing, usually during the overnight hours.
