Dustin is 26. In order to survive, he had to go through the dreadful pain of cutting off his own hand.

Dustin has always been passionate about motorcycles. The sight of traveling bike riders took his breath away. When he grew up, he was determined to become a biker so he could have a cutting-edge motorbike of his own.

Dustin lives in Wisconsin, where you need a valid car driver's license before you can drive a bike. You fill out a form in the Department of Motor Vehicles, then you get your vision checked and pass a knowledge test. By the time Dustin got his license, a shiny new Suzuki V-Strom had been waiting in his father's garage for a while. It was a very beginner-friendly bike and Dustin was on cloud nine. From that moment on, he spent a huge chunk of his life on the road. He loved going on solo long-distance trips out of his home state.

Some years later, after he had visited every state of America, he ventured as far as another continent. He took two weeks off work to go to Peru.

Dustin has the most tedious job in the world: he's an accountant. He's kind of a scatter-brained person who can't stand the drudgery. But the worst thing about the job is the enormous weight of responsibility for other people's money. An accountant lives in the state of constant fear of overlooking a legal development. The financial penalties for organizations in the US are huge, and they can be incurred for the tiniest mistakes. You sort of learn to live in the moment because you never know what happens tomorrow. When things go wrong, you're lucky if they simply fire you. They might also make you work off your debt for several years, all because of a seemingly insignificant error. Anxiety never stops haunting an accountant. Dustin has already lost half the hair on his head. Let this serve as visual evidence of the way his job affects his health.

Dustin's motorcycle getaways felt like an escape to heaven. Those were the moments when he felt truly free. That particular voyage promised to be spectacular. Dustin was hoping to make some fun selfies to show off his courage and creativity. His destination was the Cotahuasi Canyon. He'd chosen it because it had lots of caves, crevices, and rocky outcrops to explore.

He used Google Maps to plan his route, and then he set off on his disastrous voyage. His bike went steady uphill, then slid gracefully downhill. Dustin enjoyed the road so much he was singing at the top of his lungs. His voice echoed off the other side of the canyon. Delightful!

Dustin felt on top of the world, overwhelmed by a giddy kind of happiness. He decided to take some pictures on a whim. A perfect selfie needs a background with good lighting that also looks exotic enough. He noticed a spot in the bottom of a crevice that seemed to fit. Dustin needed to climb down to reach it. There was a huge boulder stuck between the walls of the crevice. Dustin tested the boulder's integrity by standing and jumping on top of it. Then, he proceeded to climb down, holding onto the boulder for support.

After he made a dozen top-notch selfies, it was time to climb back up, return to his bike, and ride on. But when Dustin reached the boulder and grabbed it just like he did before, it moved. Dustin fell, dragging the boulder down with him. He passed out from the shock. When he came to his senses, he screamed with pain and despair.

An agonizing night followed, then another. On the third day, Dustin ran out of water. He realized there was no way he'd get out of there in one piece. No one would come to rescue him as there was no service down in the crevice.

The thought had been lingering in Dustin's mind but he was wary of focusing on it: he had to cut off his own hand, which was already smothered beyond recovery. Dustin struggled to remain calm as he applied a makeshift tourniquet above his elbow. He took a deep breath and giggled hysterically as he went on with his dreadful task. The most difficult and horrifying step was breaking the bone. After starving and suffering for three days, he just didn't have enough strength left to make the effort.

After he reached his motorcycle, he had to drive for 15 miles before his phone had signal again. Dustin called a rescue team and immediately passed out from exhaustion. He woke up in the hospital, feeling as if he just had a terrible nightmare. Unfortunately, the hand stump was there as a reminder. This happened every morning until Dustin adjusted to his new reality: he'd wake up and he wouldn't believe he had lost a hand.

If you're a thrill-seeker like Dustin, please take care and don't do anything stupid just to make a cool selfie. Losing a hand isn't even the worst thing that could have happened.
