Danny's 14 and his Dad found out he was practicing something very inappropriate for a young man, after installing hidden cameras in Danny's room.

Dad had always wanted Danny to grow up into a strong and manly person. Mom, however, insisted he was too young to do men's work. Not that there was a lot of men's work to do. Danny and his father would sometimes help his Granny with gardening. It didn't feel very difficult but Danny still tired easily and had to rest a lot. On top of that, he just didn't enjoy shoveling dirt or exhausting himself lifting weights at the gym. Dad despised Danny for this and accused him of behaving like a damsel.

Danny preferred to make friends exclusively with girls. He could never get along with boys because they were very rude and obnoxious to him. When he wasn't with friends, he locked himself up in his room with his collection of educational videos. Dad did everything he could to get Danny outside and do stuff together.

One day, Dad invited Danny to change the tires on their car. Danny worked himself into a frenzy, tightening the screws, putting the mechanisms together, and rolling the wheels between garages. Dad was glowing with pride, saying he was finally going to make a man out of his son. His fellow car enthusiasts were praising Danny as "a great helping hand". Danny didn't even notice his back starting to hurt. But at home, he barely managed to walk up the stairs before he doubled over in pain. Mom yelled at Dad for running Danny off his feet like this. Danny forced himself to ignore the pain enough to come out of his room and tell them he was okay, just so they would calm down.

Danny needed to bring his father to realize he was cut from a different cloth and nuts and bolts just weren't his thing. Dad was already questioning his orientation and if Danny just told him the truth, it might have dispelled those suspicions. But Danny didn't even dare to hint at his true obsession. It would shatter Dad's dream of a tough and manly son. So Danny just did his best to play along.

Dad invented challenges for Danny and watched how he would handle them. Once, he abandoned Danny in the middle of the woods and hid himself to watch him. When Danny cried in fear, Dad came out of the bushes like: "OK come on, bonny lass! Stop sniveling!" So Danny dragged himself along feeling like a total failure.

Dad remained determined to reform his son in his own image. He took Danny with him wherever he went, but when he shoved a tool into Danny's hands, the boy would just hit his own fingers. Danny obeyed his father with no objections but he didn't let go of his own passions either. He kept studying and preparing himself for a great challenge. Dad became even more suspicious. He kept his eye on Danny at all times, until finally pronouncing him a "weakling" who was unfit to do men's work and leaving him alone. Or that's what Danny thought until he learned he had been under constant video surveillance. For now, Danny relished in his newfound freedom and indulged in his passion. He practiced pirouette, cabriole, revoltade, and plie. And he got really good! His approach was to analyze the technique before trying to bring together the elements of a movement. He listened to classical music and learned something new about ballet every day.

One night, Dad came to Danny's room, looking morose. Danny knew it was time for the big conversation. Dad confessed he had installed hidden cameras in his room so he could see everything he had been doing. Danny was as incredibly ashamed as he was frightened.

Dad went on to say that a man ought to be strong and do a real man's job instead of indulging in this nonsense. It's for people who are weak of character and incapable of anything better than "frolicking". Danny went on to argue that the thing he loves about dancing is the impression of flight. Very few people are capable of that and Danny had gotten pretty good even though he was completely self-taught! Danny opened a video of a ballet performance and spoke about the great art mastered by those people. He could see Dad's expression change to fascination. Danny told him about the renowned entertainers, like Gene Kelly, Michael Jackson, and Fred Astaire, who incorporated elements of ballet into their dances. He played videos of the most famous ballet performers in the world, such as Rudolf Nureyev and Alberto Alonso. Dad was clearly captivated. Danny realized the hard work Dad did at his manly job didn't leave him much opportunity to keep up with art news.

Dad didn't hesitate to express his support for Danny's choice now. He allowed Danny to apply for drama school. Danny's takeaway is: rather than hide your passions behind a closed door, you should let your loved ones see what it is you're so fascinated and excited about.
