Old Livia is from Brazil. Her story is about staying pregnant for as long as 65 years. What happened to her ancient baby in the end?

Livia may be 85 already, but she remembers the fun she had in her youth vividly. She was a cheerful, frisky girl with a lot of friends. They loved climbing rocks and diving in the river from a cliff.

A hilarious incident happened when a celebrity came to visit their town to purchase a golf course, and he drove a Mercedes convertible. They didn't see a lot of personal cars on the plantation: there were mostly heavy-duty trucks. The girls were impatient to sit in a luxury car like this. After dark, they snuck up to the car and climbed inside with great care. Livia was so excited she accidentally lowered the handbrake. The car started and although Livia kept hitting every pedal, it just refused to stop. When it hit a tree, the fun fizzled out completely. The front of the car was visibly dinged up. The girls leapt out and scattered in all directions. They expected the police to come for them but that never happened. Apparently the celebrity thought he had forgotten to engage the hand brake himself. Livia and her friends couldn't believe they got off the hook so easily!

Years later, Livia was still waiting for her prince and her patience was rewarded! When she was working on a kava plantation, she saw a handsome young man whose black hair was gleaming in the sunlight. He introduced himself as Pedro, which means "rock" in English. He joked he was a man of commitment and if he ever fell in love with a girl, his choice would be set in stone for life. He and Livia started dating. Every date was unforgettable! They'd listen to the dawn chorus of the birds and sing songs and go swimming at twilight.

Six months later, they moved in together. Livia's young husband was always by her side, whether they were working, doing chores, or cooking a delicious meal. Love like this is hard to come by. When Livia got pregnant, it was going really well at first: nothing hurt, nothing bothered her at all. But when she was about to become a mother, the doctor who examined her said the baby couldn't be delivered the natural way. Livia was already scared and to make it worse, she was surrounded by women going through the procedure he suggested. One of the young mothers was screaming so horribly Livia felt sick. Then a doctor said she had passed away. Livia sidled to the door and quietly scurried out.

She was so exhausted she fell asleep as soon as Pedro drove her home. Next evening, she woke up good as new, feeling vigorous and healthy. Her Grandma said it happens when a baby goes dormant in the womb. It stopped moving or showing any other signs of life. Eventually, Livia shook the failed pregnancy out of her head, living like it never happened.

Having other kids was out of the question anyway, after Livia's sister died. She had five children that Livia and Pedro took in to raise as their own. They have now left the family fold, but they come to visit on holidays, bringing food and presents, praising their parents and telling stories. What else could the old couple ask for?

Livia's age has been taking its toll on her. Her back hurt, and occasionally there was a stinging pain in her stomach. One of her sons insisted that she get examined at the hospital. So Livia arrives and the doctors are poking and prodding her every which way and they can't agree what weird affliction has claimed her. She says she's been pregnant for 65 years. They make a cuckoo sign and then they keep doing their thing. Finally, one of them suggests Livia might have a tumor because her belly's all bulging out. They probe it to find a very solid lump. Next day, an MRI scan confirms it's a baby. They schedule an operation and Livia gets spooked out of her mind. Her baby is ancient by now. He's been waiting for so many years to see the light of day.

When Livia saw the extracted baby who weighed just over six pounds, she felt ashamed and sad for keeping him inside of her. Apparently she had an abdominal pregnancy and her body coated the baby in a lime-like substance to protect itself from infection. This is how it became mummified and fossilized. Livia wishes she hadn't escaped from the hospital. Had she agreed to the procedure back then, the baby could have been a regular person, Pedro's own son, a retired old man by now.

She reasons it's all water under the bridge now. Livia's grateful for the family she does have.
