Charlie's 13 but he has already grown old. He knew about his affliction when he was still a little kid. He couldn't help noticing it. He kept pestering his parents with questions and comparing himself to other children. Mom and Dad didn't want to let Charlie know, but a secret like this is hard to keep, considering he was present at every doctor appointment.

Charlie was born perfectly healthy. He found his newborn chart in the hospital archives and learned he weighed 7.7 lb at birth and his height was 20.5 inches. The doctor told him personally that there was no cause for alarm back when he was a baby. Mom said he looked like a strong and healthy boy.

Charlie's neighbors have a daughter who was born on the same day as him. Charlie used to be taller and bigger than his girlfriend. He learned to walk before she did. And then one day, everyone began to notice that his growth was stunted and he was losing weight. Soon, the girl was taller than him. Charlie's parents took him from doctor to doctor. But all they could do was scratch their heads.

Everyone was really alarmed when Charlie started losing hair. He'd wake up in the morning with a heap of hair on his pillow. His grandma was the one who insisted on a proper medical examination. After conducting all kinds of blood tests, they were able to establish a diagnosis: premature aging. Charlie knew he was rapidly turning into an old man.

The other kids gave him a wide berth. Who wants to play with an old fossil? They laughed at him and called him "little grandpa Charlie". Even their parents looked at him like he was a museum specimen. Charlie realized something terrible and inevitable was happening to him.

Charlie was especially hurt when the local kids stopped inviting him to play with them entirely, after he failed to catch a ball in time and his team lost the game. Everyone was yelling at him and calling him names, until one of the boys said: "What can you expect from the grandpa? He's like a hundred years old, come on." Everyone rolled with laughter. Someone snatched off Charlie's cap so everyone could see his bald head. They screamed at him to go away and never show his face in the yard again. Charlie worked and played at home by himself now. Dad asked him why he didn't hang out with other kids anymore but Charlie didn't tell him why until years later.

As for school, Charlie looked like an alien to his classmates at first but they got used to him. He loves studying. His favorite thing to do is engineering. He loves getting creative and building model ships and planes with the help of his teacher. The teacher talks a lot about cutting-edge aircraft technology. He also teaches the kids 3D modeling and design.

Charlie knows his disease is incurable. According to his doctor, it's genetic. Very few people with this disease live past 17. Charlie cried when he discovered this. He's scared of dying. Mom and Dad talk to him a lot to reassure him and convince him to make the best of the years he's got to live. So Charlie does his best not to waste any time. He's got lots of books to study and tons of ideas to implement. He needs to finish high school, and enter a university, and build a ship or plane that he's hoping to name after himself.

Recently, Charlie and his father went outside to launch the airliner that Charlie made. The neighborhood boys surrounded them. They were gawking and asking Charlie to let them try piloting the ship. Dad reminded them about that incident years ago. He said it wasn't a friendly thing to do at all. But Charlie forgave them. A lot of them actually joined Charlie's engineering class.

It's not Charlie's fault this disease happened to him, but he's not about to give up. He's got other comorbid conditions that usually happen to old people, like atherosclerosis. Even if he looks like "grandpa Charlie", he enjoys yelling and running around and making mischief. He's got lots of friends now; they call him "granddaddy" but it doesn't sound like an insult to him anymore.
