Nadine's 16 and she has recently learned the shocking truth about someone she trusted.

Nadine was born in a fairly ordinary family: she had a dad, a mom, and an uncle who was Mom's brother. As a little girl, Nadine used to spend a lot of time with her uncle. They'd watch movies or cartoons, he'd buy her toys and he'd always spoil her. They were happy: he was like a father to her and she was like a daughter to him. It was actually him who suggested that the girl's parents name her Nadine.

But Nadine didn't know anything about his job, his relationships, or his daily life in general. Her parents work ordinary jobs. Mom is a nurse and Dad is a rescuer. But she never learned what her uncle did. When she asked him or any of her other relatives, they'd just avoid the question or say they didn't know. As a kid, Nadine didn't find it suspicious that someone she spent lots of time with didn't tell her basic stuff about himself.

Then Nadine went to primary school. Her parents and her grandpa attended the welcome assembly at school, but Uncle wasn't there. They told Nadine he went away on a business trip. Time went by but Nadine still didn't see him. He'd been sending her toys and cartoon CDs for two years. She'd been missing him. She'd go to sleep every night hugging one of the toys, a white teddy bear, and hoping that her beloved uncle would come back tomorrow so they could go to the movies, or take a walk in the park, or just hang out together.

Nadine had already turned 8 by the time they finally met. His business trip that lasted two whole years didn't seem weird to her at the time. Any memories she does have about Uncle's personal life from back then are very fuzzy and incoherent. She was simply glad that he was back and just as happy to see her. A few more years passed.

Once, when she was almost 14, Nadine went to another city to visit her grandma. She's Nadine's paternal grandma so Uncle is not her son. But she inquired personally about Uncle right away. She asked where he was working and how it was going for him. Nadine was just as clueless as before. Then, Grandma spilled the beans and Nadine was shocked. She said he never went on a two-year business trip. In fact, he was in jail. All those presents were actually purchased by Nadine's parents under his name. Nadine's world crumbled down. Her uncle was always so kind and funny and caring. He was her role model. How could he commit such an atrocity? Grandma apologized and asked Nadine not to tell anyone that she let it slip. So she didn't. She pretended she didn't know anything.

But she couldn't be at ease with her uncle anymore. Every little thing he did raised lots of questions and suspicions. Nadine noticed that whenever he got a phone call, he'd go to another room so that nobody would hear him. And he'd often leave the house right after talking on the phone. One of these days, he left Nadine alone in his apartment. She watched from the balcony as he exited the house and got in a car with some man. After making sure they'd driven away, she ran to his bedroom and started rummaging through cabinets looking for clues. Then she came to her senses. She put Uncle's stuff back in order and calmed down for a while.

One day, Nadine managed to eavesdrop as her uncle was talking on the phone again. He spoke about things that didn't make a lot of sense for a 14-year-old: something about money and debt. This was useless to her.

Next summer, Nadine persuaded Uncle to take her hunting with him and some friends of his that she didn't know. After a long day, the adults were sitting by the fire and chatting while Nadine was in the tent. She pretended to be asleep but of course she was actually listening to their conversation. One of Uncle's friends asked: "What are you going to do with the five houses that you've bought?" Nadine thought: "Five houses? Holy heck! He's got very rich friends!" But then she realized the question was for her uncle. They went on talking about land, construction, and other business matters.

Nadine was extremely confused but she understood one thing: her uncle is very rich! But why does he live in a simple two-bedroom apartment, drive an ordinary car, and even use an outdated phone? Why was he in jail? Did he steal all this money? Is he on the run? Is he with a gang? Nadine got loaded with a ton of questions that will never be answered. She'd never bring herself to speak to him frankly and clear things up. So she's decided to stop playing Sherlock and she's trying to convince herself that all those theories are nothing more than her own imagination. She keeps going as if her uncle is just an ordinary person.

What would you do in Nadine's place? Would you keep pushing for the truth?
