Hui used to be an ordinary teenager who ate ordinary things. He only began experiencing weird urges after he turned 13. It was in the late eighties, when his country, China, was rising from the ashes. Hui's family was constantly on the verge of starvation.

Hui tried to eat things that had no nutritional value in place of real food. He had no idea why other teenagers didn't do this. Later, he learned that he had an eating disorder called pica. He tried eating wood but didn't really like it. His favorite non-food item to eat was bricks.

Hui lives in the Hainan province and there are lots of brick factories there. He used to play with his friends next to one of the factories, so he could easily get as many bricks as he needed. He tried to keep his tastes a secret until he invented a great way to make some money and also prank his friends. He made a bet to eat half a brick for 10 dollars and it made him unbelievably rich for a teenager. Hui's dad worked right there at the factory and he made 50 dollars a month. Pica was a very useful disorder to have when the times were hard. Hui still exploits it to make some extra money by betting with strangers.

Hui became very popular at school, venerated even. The teenagers thought he was some kind of a Superman who could do incredible stuff. He could ask any girl out and they usually agreed. To their delight, he often ate bricks during their dates. If he were a teenager right now, he would probably make a YouTube video to roll in money and international fame. Unfortunately, the Internet wasn't even invented back then. Even now, China's got restricted Internet with no access to most of the popular Western services, including YouTube.

Hui didn't enjoy going to school very much. 5 years later, as an adult, he had to apply for a job at the same brick factory. He was actually happy to work there, with plenty of food literally at his feet. His new coworkers wanted to know how he could sustain himself on bricks while staying healthy like a bull. Yes, Hui's perfectly fit, his teeth are flawless, and his stomach is fine. He must have developed some kind of resistance as his body adapted to consuming and digesting bricks. Hui eats them for lunch every day now. For breakfast and supper, he has regular food.

When Hui was 28, he got married and the wedding cake looked like a pile of bricks. He's 45 now and he has a 16-year-old son. Guess what? He eats bricks too. Either Hui's condition is hereditary, or his son just decided to try them after watching Hui and then he acquired the taste.

Recently, Hui took a vacation in Thailand. He saw so many brick buildings and construction sites, he could barely keep himself from taking a bite! But they were surrounded by fences and the streets were crowded. So he had to settle for gnawing at the wall in his hotel room. Luckily, nobody noticed the state of the wall behind his bed when he checked out, or it would have cost him a pretty penny.

As for his son, when Hui sent him off to his great-grandma for summer break, he ate an entire wall. It was covered by a huge painting, which concealed the damage. Years later, when the great-grandma died and it was time to clean up and sell her house, the family had a good laugh over it. But the boy had to turn over all of the pocket money he had been saving up.

Since then, Hui brings home a brick every day just to keep his son from eating the house. His son doesn't even ask for sweets or any other treats but bricks, which is definitely good for the family budget. The boy is already dreaming of working at the brick factory, especially since he's not doing very well at school either.

Hui says his family is really lucky to live next to a brick factory, or they'd consume their own house. Going to the doctor seems pointless as he feels perfectly healthy. Let's discuss Hui's unusual condition in the comments. Do you think he should do something about it?
