Peggy's 37 years old but she only looks 4. Why does time have no power over her?

Peggy was her Mom and Dad's fourth child. All her sisters are strong, healthy girls that are a few years older than her. Their father really wanted to finally have a son but his fourth child was a girl again. He nursed Peggy and wheeled her stroller and bought her presents. Everyone loved each other and adored little Peggy.

When one of Peggy's sisters got angry that they were forced to babysit her, Mom replied that she was going to take Peggy to an orphanage since nobody cared for her here. She just meant it as an offhand remark. But when she went out of the house, her daughters were standing in her way, looking resolute. Mom found it very endearing but she didn't miss the chance to make Peggy's sisters play with her all day. Later, the older sisters invented a special little sidecar that they attached to a bicycle so Peggy could ride with them wherever they went.

Two year later, Peggy's oldest sister got concerned about her height and development. Her friend's little sister was already talking very well and walking a little bit, while Peggy was just babbling and crawling and generally remaining an infant. Their parents only got worried when Peggy lost most of the hair on her head and her teeth came loose. She was 5 but she had never learned to walk.

Peggy was diagnosed with severe congenital hypothyroidism. The thyroid hormone is responsible for your metabolism and if your body's lacking it, it hibernates like a bear in winter. There were significant changes in her blood. Her cholesterol level was so high it affected her heart. She had difficulty breathing and blood vessel abnormalities. It was too late to start treatment. Had they diagnosed Peggy as soon as she was born, they could have mitigated her affliction.

The doctors prescribed a growth hormone supplement. Provided she kept taking it constantly, Peggy would slowly get better. She'd start talking and walking and grow up a little bit, to about the size of a 4-year-old. The family wouldn't have managed on their own but their kind neighbors came to help and the little girl was able to walk and talk and read and write.

Soon after Peggy turned 19, her Mom got sick. She had a severe and untreatable disease. She searched for a woman who could replace her as Peggy's caretaker but none of the volunteers agreed to take on such a responsibility. She passed on quietly one November night, her quest left unfulfilled. Those were dark times. Peggy's heartbroken Dad seemed to have forgotten she even existed. The only days things looked up for Peggy were when one of her sisters came to visit. They went out of their way to get Dad to stir up and pull himself together, but he never responded. But a year later, a young woman next door started visiting them frequently. She cooked food for Peggy and made sure she took her meds and cleaned their clothes. Peggy's Dad was finally smiling again and looking fondly at her savior.

And that was how Peggy got a stepmother. In fact, Peggy thinks she's her Mom whose soul has inhabited this kindly woman. A year later, Peggy's little sister was born. She helped Mom with chores and with the baby girl. Their life was back on track.

Peggy is homeschooled by the school teacher who taught her to read and write many years ago. Now, she teaches her about the people on other continents. After studying with her, when Peggy's on her own, she opens her box of toys and sings lullabies to her plastic daughters.

Peggy's stepsister is already an adult and she looks like a real princess. She got married recently. Everyone at the wedding assumed Peggy was her daughter. Little did they know Peggy was 16 whole years older than her!

The newlyweds have moved to a big city and they've promised to take Peggy along sometime, so she could see the skyscrapers and take a ride on the subway. Peggy wishes she could live like other people do. But she's going to remain a child forever, 40 inches tall and with a baby face. She's going to take medicine for the rest of her life to survive. Even so, she is grateful to all the kind people of the world for helping her.
