(6) CWO Tom Fitzpatrick, 17th Inf Regt

This is next in the series of video interviews which I conducted in connection with our 3 1/2 hour documentary entitled: "mden of Truth and Courage in a 'forgotten war;' the 17th Infantry Regiment in Korea.
The late Tom Fitzpatrick joined the National Guard in 1947, and was sent to a Transportation Company in Chicago. He was sent to Japan where he joined the 7th Infantry Division as a rifleman at the base of Mt. Fuji. They were being trained as amphibious landing experts. He was then assigned to Fox Company of the 17th Infantry in Japan. His unit then became involved in the amphibious landing in Korea, first in Pusan, and then at Inchon. They waited for the tide to change at Inchon, and they could hear the sounds of battle.Ultimately, they were transported on landing crafts to Inchon after climbing down a rope ladder from the troop ship. He tells of his experience after the landing at the beach at Inchon subsequent to the Marines who had landed the day before. Ultimately, they made it to the city of Seoul on a mountain overlooking the city, and then ultimately to the town below. He speaks of his buddy "Baldy" who was killed by a gunshot to his head. They were being hit by "friendly fire." It was "scary" at night until they moved into another area, the Yalu River. This is Tom's story as told by him.
