(23) Sgt. Clark Raines, 17th Inf. Regt..wmv

Sgt. Clark Raines was born in 1929, and was drafted in November 1950. He joined the 17th Infantry in April 1951 in K Co. He was assigned as a rifleman, but then was given a radio. He shared a foxhole with a Phillipine national and a Chinese-American. They were foreigners to him. He had never been out of Tennessee before this. He was involved in a firefight for four hours with a large Chinese unit, when 100 of the Chinese were killed. He was promoted to Corporal after six weeks, and six weeks later he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the Purple Heart because of a shrapnel wound from a mortar round. He was evacuated to Sendai, Japan. His Co. CO was Capt. Bannister from New York, who had previously been his Platoon Leader.
