(36) Cpl. Robert "Bobby" Wilson, 17th Inf. Regt..wmv

Booby Wilson was born in Tupelo, Mississippi (Elvis' birthplace) in 1931. He arrived at the 17th Infantry HQ , and was assigned to Easy Co., 1st squad of 1st platoon. He was assigned as a BAR gunner. When on a patrol attempting to capture an enemy soldier, he was seriously injured with mortar shrapnel from a mortar round which landed about 15 feet away, and ultimately was transferred by a jeep to battalion aid station. This was his first action in the Korean War. Ultimately, he ended up in a MASH hospital. He went back to his platoon after being rehabilitated for 39 days.Bobby rejoined the company in the Chorwan Valley in mid-March, days before the April battle of Pork Chop Hill. Because he had difficulty moving, he was assigned as a 2 1/2 ton truck driver, and ultimately as Lt. Smith's jeep driver. As a driver during the horrendous July battle of Pork Chop Hill, he transported mortar shells to the Mortar Squad which was ultimately destroyed by enemy artillery fire, and he escaped being killed.
