American Bandstand 1964 -Roll Call/Top 10- The House of the Rising Sun, The Animals

Airdate: September 5, 1964

The Animals’ cover of “The House of the Rising Sun” is the #1 song in the country starting today and will remain so for 3 straight weeks. The original, unedited 4:29 version was too long for American radio stations so The Animals’ producer, Mickie Most, allowed an edited version (the one played today) to be released in the United States. America wouldn’t get the “original uncut version” until next year when it was unceremoniously released on the album “Mickie Most Presents British Go-Go”.

The people in charge of predicting the songs for today’s Top 10 (usually taped weeks in advance) didn’t do particularly well this week. The only other song actually in the Top 10 (in Billboard) is “C’mon and Swim”. 4 of the songs (“A Tear Fell”, “When You Loved Me”, “A House Is Not A Home”, and “I’ll Always Love You”) never even made it into the top 40 and “Sweet William” peaked right at #40. The only songs on the list to EVER make it into the top 10 were “C’mon and Swim” and “The House of the Rising Sun”…Come on producers!

See if these songs look more familiar. Here is the actual Top 10 on Sept. 5, 1964:
10) G.T.O.
9) How Do You Do It
8) A Hard Day’s Night
7) Under The Boardwalk
6) Bread and Butter
5) C’mon and Swim
4) Because (Dave Clark 5)
3) Everybody Loves Somebody (Dean Martin)
2) Where Did Our Love Go
1) The House of the Rising Sun

What a playlist! At least they got #1 right : )
Coming Up: More of the “British Invasion”. Thanks for watching!
