American Bandstand 1968 -Hollywood Hotline/Spotlight Dance- 96 Tears, ? and the Mysterians.
Airdate: April 27, 1968
The children of Mexican-American migrant farm workers, Eddie Serrato, Frank Lugo, Frank Rodriguez (14 year-old keyboardist responsible for the unique organ riff), Bobby Balderrama, and Question Mark rose to fame against all odds when, on Oct. 29, 1966, their song, “96 Tears”, became the #1 song in America and would go on to become the #2 song of the year. (#1 was “California Dreamin‘”)
Growing up in Saginaw, MI, Question Mark (born Rudy Martinez), always dreamed of going on American Bandstand as a dancer, but he never had the money to get to Philadelphia or Hollywood. On Oct. 1, 1966 he and the Mysterians, who were all avid fans of Bandstand, finally made it onto the show as the musical guest performing “96 Tears” and “I Need Somebody”. He and Dick Clark stayed in touch until Dick’s passing in 2012.
The Spotlight Dancers dancing to this 18 month old “oldie but goodie” include regulars Frank Vanderpuil, Stan Sobern and Dick Clark….aka Robin Morris : )
Here is the entire episode (pt. 1 of 4) from American Bandstand Fan Club’s channel:

Coming Up Next: From 1967, some fun dancer ”pair-ups” that I think you will enjoy.
