American Bandstand 1967- Bic, Box Tops & a Blooper-TOP 10- The Letter, The Box Tops

Airdate: September 23, 1967

The Box Tops’ “The Letter” just hit #1 today for its first of 4 weeks in a row and will be the #2 biggest song of 1967, 2nd only to Lulu’s “To Sir, with Love.” It will be #1 on Bandstand at least 1 more time on Oct. 21 (previously posted). The Box Tops will appear in person on Jan. 18, 1968 to sing “The Letter”, “Neon Rainbow” and “Cry Like A Baby”.

I wonder if the girl in the song wrote her “Letter” with a Bic?...I hear you can get 3 for the price of 1!

Regulars I spotted dancing today are: Don Sanuskar & Roni Menacker (1:34 in front of the riser), Jim Miranda (2:03), Rick McNay (2:10), Christy Schneider (2:18), Tracy Silver (2:38), Robin Morris (2:29), Pat Dickinson & Mike Langham (2:54), Maureen Cohen (2:57), Robin Miller (3:04), Eddie Sanchez (3:17), Mark Reinglass (3:19), and Famous Hooks & Jenny Nichols on the riser.

….And in TV and music news, last Sunday night, Sept 17, audiences got a heavy dose of subversive rockers on primetime TV. First, on “The Ed Sullivan Show”, The Doors gave their first and last performance on the show when Jim Morrison refused to change the “Light My Fire” lyrics from the controversial(?) “Girl, we couldn’t get much HIGHER” to “Girl, we couldn’t get much BETTER” leading to The Doors being permanently banned. And then, on “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour”, at the end of The Who’s performance of “My Generation”, the band destroyed their instruments and set off an explosion from Keith Moon’s drum that injured him and caused Pete Townsend to suffer permanent, partial hearing loss. If any parents were watching CBS that night, I’ll bet their minds were blown!
