American Bandstand 1968 - Hollywood Hotline - The Snake, Al Wilson

Airdate: October 5, 1968

Deedee DelCampos talks with Al Wilson about the history of his newly released, Johnny Rivers produced song which peaks at #27 today. “The Snake” will be Al’s biggest hit until 1973 when his song “Show and Tell” will go all the way to #1.

“The Snake” is based on Aesop‘s Fable “The Farmer and the Viper”, and was written by civil rights activist Oscar Brown Jr., originally as a poem in 1963 and then he made it into the song covered by Al Wilson here in 1968. 53 years after it was written (and 46 years after Wilson’s popular version was released), during the 2016 presidential campaign, then-candidate Donald Trump often would quote the song at campaign rallies to make the point against allowing Syrian refugees into the United States. As this was never it’s intended meaning, members of the Brown family repeatedly requested he not use it (Oscar Brown Jr. passed way in 2005) at these rallies. Despite this, Trump continued to use it several times after the request.
