ERASURE River Deep Mountain High

A track from the 3rd LP from British duo Erasure and one of the most iconic and best loved songs of all time! I am posting this to mark the passing eleven years ago today of a truly legendary songwriter Eleanor Louise Greenwich better known professionally as Ellie Greenwich. Among the classics she penned either on her own or with her husband and co-writer Jeff Barry were 'Da Doo Ron Ron', 'Be My Baby', 'Leader of the Pack', 'Baby I Love You' and this amazing song 'River Deep Mountain High' originally a hit for Ike & Tina Turner. Erasure have given the R&B classic a high energy treatment with Andy Bell's extraordinary vocal the centrepiece.

Creating their wondrous and prolific hits at the Brill Building in New York, Greenwich and Barry were also along side the other great songwriting partnerships of the era - Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil; Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller and of course Gerry Goffin & Carole King. That was a golden era of creativity in the pop music world; creating standards that have already endured in some cases for half a century, and i fathom will live on, long after my lifetime too.
