Divinyls 4 PLAY 1990'S CHRISTINA AMPHLETT

Having already posted a Divinyls 4 play of songs from their debut set 'Desperate', this upload is part of the series of clips celebrating my all time favourite recording artists and this one wraps up my best loved Aussie singers. Following on from Renee Geyer, Marcia Hines, Kylie Minogue and what would have been an Olivia Newton John extended play (thanks, not, youtube copyright police), I pay homage and thanks to my most beloved Australian group; headed by arguably the best rock chick ever to emerge from a land downunder - Christina Amphlett.

For a wonderful 15 years, the music of The Divinyls filled my turntable, my walkman and my CD players! Beginning with 'Boys In Town' in October 1981, the band released several albums; beginning with a Mini LP soundtrack to the movie 'Monkey Grip' which featured their debut single which had made the Top 10. Lead singer Chrissie Amphlett took a role in the movie and the Divinyls' appearances on music programs revealed an exciting and distinctive new force on the local scene. Follow up LP's 'Desperate', 'What A Life' and 'Temperamental' provided considerable success in Australia and yielding several hit singles including 'Science Fiction', 'Pleasure & Pain' and 'Hey Little Boy'. By 1990, the band had signed a new deal with Virgin records and the self titled album included the track that most American audiences remember The Divinyls for 'I Touch Myself' which kicks off this fab 4 play.

'I Touch Myself' was predictably a #1 hit downunder ( their only chart topper) and thanks to a racy video, also made #4 in America and #10 in Britain. Sadly it was more challenging to follow up that success internationally, although The Divinyls were in the 1990's a band that featured on a number of movie soundtracks and were a force on MTV, thanks to the charisma of their lead singer. 'Make Out Alright' the 2nd clip edited here, is the original promotional video, but with the longer album version. Inexplicably this wonderful pop/rock track bombed at home, not even cracking the Top 100.

In 1992, 'Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore' which had been a hit all the way back in 1965 by The Young Rascals, was recorded and released by The Divinyls giving them a Top 20 in Australia and it was used in the cult movie 'Buffy: The Vampire Slayer' soundtrack. I have uploaded the video of the band (a bit on the low resolution side, sorry!). This too, should have been a big hit around the world.

Finally in this fab fourplay by Aussie rockers The Divinyls, is the title track to their 4th 'Temperamental' which although was released in 1988, felt more at home for me, with their 90's recordings. This should have been issued as a single, but wasn't. A pair of cover recordings in 1993 kept the band's profile: Roxy Music's 'Love Is The Drug' and The Troggs 'Wild Thing' and then Divinyls achieved their last big success with the 1996 opus 'Underworld' which suffered production delays but had pre-release singles find chart action on 'I'm Jealous' (#14) - their final Top 20 hit, and 'Human On The Inside' which was later recorded by The Pretenders.

There never will be another performer like Chrissie Amphlett. Tragically she passed away in 2013 at the age of 53. She and her band leave behind an impressive body of work and a combination of tight musicianship; excellent songwriting, and the extraordinary presence of its lead singer, created the sheer force of nature that was The Divinyls. I have very few groups among my favourite recording artists, but this one left its mark. I even had a surreal moment of celebrity sighting all the way back in 1982 when the band had only just really begun its career. I filed past them in a narrow corridor as I was on my way to see my tutor and their management must have been in the same building. It was a glorious moment for me, one I have never forgotten. I also saw them live and that too is forever etched in my mind's eye. Rock chicks may come and go, but artists like Christina Amphlett and The Divinyls are once in a generation.
