SHANIA TWAIN I'm Holdin' On To Love

The first of three country hits from 2000 that for me mark an anniversary of another bookmarked year in my life. 20 years ago, I became a home owner; my career was perhaps at its height and country music was the genre that most spoke to me. I had been an early fan of the genre back in the mid 70's when I first discovered pop music, but somewhere along the way, it got lost among disco, one hit wonders and rock and roll. But in the mid 90's I reconnected with the genre thanks to international stars like Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, The Mavericks and Mary Chapin Carpenter as well as local ones: Gina Jeffreys, Jane Saunders and Troy Cassar Daley. There was an honest, but fun side to country music that I found especially supportive and soulful - it was the genre's wide reach across ballads, upbeat anthems and spiritual forays into the land and the earth that were welcoming when although I was fulfilled in some ways, was lacking in others. Loneliness was a part of it, and once again music came to the rescue.

Shania Twain literally burst onto the scene in the mid 90's and crashed right through the industry and its predilection for easy labelling and subjugation. She traversed country and pop and redefined the 'cross over' making it seemingly a new phenomenon to swim in both lanes at once and not only achieve huge sales but pretty impressive acclaim too. 'Come On Over' was recorded and released in late 1997, but by the middle of 2000, Shania was still issuing singles from it! 'I'm Holding On (To Save My Life)' was incredibly the 12th song to be released from it! That in and of itself is an awesome achievement, but the album itself was ginormous, shipping a gobsmacking 40 million units; 20 million in America, and stands as one of the top ten selling albums of all time! Despite all of this (or perhaps in spite of it), the singer has only released two more albums of new material in the 23 years since: 'Up'' in 2002 and 'Now' in 2017. But with all that success, why would you? The Canadian performer has sold over 200 million albums worldwide and it makes her one of the most successful recording artists ever!
