Pretty much every guy I know would love to have wider shoulders. Shoulder to waist ratio is one of the most aesthetically pleasing attributes. But you first need to understand which muscle to be targeting when you are trying to accomplish this.. And this muscle is the lateral/medial head of your deltoid.

9 times out of 10, when I see guys doing exercises to build their medial head, such as lateral raises, I see issues. And these issues may be the reason for their shoulder pain, or even overdeveloped traps.

So the first thing you gotta stop doing is allowing the weight to come down and in front of you. This will prevent you from working the supraspinatus muscle, which will minimize risk of rotator cuff pain, and will also increase the amount of time under tension for the correct muscle.

After that, you want to stop shrugging. Too many times, guys (and girls) are using weights that are WAY too heavy for themselves. The delts are a small muscles.. they don't need a lot of weight to be worked. So next time you go to hit your side delts, focus on keeping your shoulders down, and pushing the weight outward and stopping just at shoulder level.
