The French Revolution was one of the most significant moments in European History, in which the people of France overthrew their monarchy who for a long time had been making poor decisions and been terrible rulers. King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette both were executed by the guillotine in Paris, but their problems went on for years and the French people were starving in the streets. Many across the world saw the execution of the French King and Queen as a barbaric event, however for the rebels it was a sign of the changing times, of which today France still remains a republic.

Marie Antoinette the Queen of France was one of the targets of the Revolution. She was initially an Austrian Prince who became married to Louis, however when she became Queen she spent fortunes on clothes, luxuries, furniture and decoration at the royal palaces. She was involved in scandals including the Diamond Necklace Affair, along with being accused of having affairs and illegitimate children. But for the people of France who had no money, and little food some even blamed the economic crisis on Marie. After the Revolution took hold, and events such as the Storming of the Bastille and the March on Versailles took place, the Republic was declared ending the monarchy. Marie's husband Louis was first executed by the guillotine, but for months no-one knew what to do with the Queen.

Eventually she was placed on trial, and was sentenced to death being found guilty of emptying the treasury of funds and of treason. In front of a huge crowd she was led through the streets of Paris before facing the same executioner who took her husband's head. She was beheaded in one stroke from the guillotine.
