大きな被害を受けた岩手・山田町 ［震災3日目］

津波の被害を受けた岩手県下閉伊郡山田町の状況を伝えた映像(3月13日: 午前10時すぎ)
北に宮古市、南は釜石市に隣接する山田町。取材スタッフは、山田湾の北側の海岸線に位置する、大沢地区(第2地割付近)を訪れた。
国道45号線沿いを進むと、側道の鉄製フェンスが、海とは逆の方向に、延々となぎ倒され、さまざまな漂流物が付着している。
目前にあるホームセンター(ホーマック山田店)の広い敷地内は、がれきに覆われていた。
国道を外れて内陸方向に200メートルほど進むと、山田消防署に達するが、車や小型船などの残骸が道路を埋め尽くし、その先に進めない。
消防署の鉄塔(火の見やぐら)の最上部付近にも、破壊された家屋の屋根が引っかかっていて、襲ってきた津波の高さを物語っていた。
海岸方向へと戻り、再び国道45号線沿い、地域のランドマーク的施設である大型衣料品店(ファッションセンターしまむら山田店)前を進むと、その敷地内にも、原型をとどめない建築物の残骸が、大きな塊となって横たわる。
国道の進行方向右側(南東側)、山田湾に面する地域には、がれきに混じって波に運ばれてきた漁船が点在していた。
その付近にあった地元の著名飲食店(「SLドライブイン」現在は閉店)も、ほぼ全壊し、国道沿いに建てられた大きな看板だけが、かろうじて原型をとどめる形で残されていた。

To the north of Yamada town is Miyako city and to its adjacent south is Kamaishi city. Staff visit the Osawa area (near Zone 2) situated on the coastline to the north of Yamada bay. Heading down along National route 45, the iron fences of the side road have been mowed down endlessly in the opposite direction as the sea. Various flotsam have clung on to the fence. The large premises of a home improvement center (Homac, Yamada branch) ahead is covered in debris.
Staff head inland approximately 200m, off the national route, reaching Yamada Fire Station. The debris of cars and small boats have filled up the road, disabling passage.
Near the top of the fire station's steel tower, (fire lookout tower) rooftops from destroyed homes are caught, indicating the height of the tsunami that had attacked.
Returning to the direction of the coast along national route 45, past a large clothing store (Fashion Center Shimamura, Yamada branch) that serves as a landmark facility for the region, there lies a big pile of wreckage within the premises, lacking any resemblance to its original form.
To the right of where the national route runs (southeastern side) within the area facing Yamada bay, fishing boats mixed with debris that have been carried away by waves are scattered about.
A well-known local restaurant nearby ("SL Drive-in," now closed) has been almost completely wiped out, and a large billboard built along the national route is the only undamaged standing object.
