The Modern Tight Hip Problem

Many people have tight hip today. This is closely related to the modern lifestyle that involves lots of sitting on a chair and couch, very little movement, limited variety of movement. People who are more accustomed to sitting on the floor (this is common in many Asian countries including my home country, Japan) generally have much more hip mobility than people who adapted to a chair/couch lifestyle. So partly due to cultural factors and partly due to adaptation to changes in our lifestyle.

But why having tight hip is problematic? Our body is an interconnected whole and functions together as a whole, so when you lose hip mobility, you will have to make up movement from other places, and compensate. It’s not coincident that people with poor hip mobility often have lower back issues and knee issues. We have no choice but compensate. This is why it’s important to have good hip mobility and learn how to move through our hips efficiently so we can move our body as an interconnected whole.
