NICOLETTE LARSON Rhumba Girl Live At The Roxy

Before I mark the 40th anniversary of one of my Top 10 Albums of all time by the late and great Nicolette Larson, I have a post or two from a promo release that was repackaged and issued on CD by the great Rhino label in the 00's. 'Live At the Roxy' was recorded in late December of 1978 around the time that the singer's debut track 'Lotta Love' was getting some serious traction on its way to the Top 10 in America. Her self titled LP 'Nicolette' was a good seller both at home and here in Australia, where I fell in love with the pretty, long haired and distinctive singer. 'You Send Me' (a lovely cover of the Sam Cooke classic) and 'Rhumba Girl (a Jesse WInchester composition) were initial other noteworthy selections, but over the years 'Baby Don't You Do It' (a Motown cover) and 'Can't Get Away From You' (an original by a Nicolette frequent collaborator 'Lauren Wood) have stood the rest of time really well. 'Rhumba Girl' is quintessential Nicolette - traversing genres and putting her own inimitable stamp on a song. Nicolette Larson left us way too soon, but thankfully her music keeps her spirit alive and kicking! 1979 was the year she really took off, and 40 years on her music still sounds really great!
